How do I create a mulch path with bark

Creating a mulch path with bark is surprisingly straightforward and gives any garden a softer, more natural look. Start by marking out the route of your path with string or a garden hose—this lets you get a feel for the shape before committing. Once you’re happy, cut away the turf or remove existing surface material to a depth of around 5–10cm. This will help the bark stay in place and stop it spilling onto the surrounding areas.

To reduce weed growth, it’s worth laying down a good-quality membrane before adding the bark. Make sure it’s pinned securely, and if you’re curving the path, cut and overlap the fabric neatly. The membrane helps with drainage while keeping the bark separate from the soil underneath.

Next comes the bark itself. AHS Ltd supplies bark mulch suitable for paths, giving you both texture and a tidy finish. Spread it evenly to a depth of at least 5cm—more if you want a thicker, cushioned feel underfoot. Once in place, walk along the path to settle it, and top up any dips that appear.

Over time, the bark will settle and weather naturally, giving your garden a lived-in charm that works brilliantly with planting on either side.
